As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we continue to reflect on the lessons learned from our area’s history. This month, we look back to what we learned from the communication gaps during Hurricane Agnes, 53 years after it devastated Pennsylvania in one of the costliest storms ever.
Hurricane Agnes revealed significant flaws in disaster communication, primarily stemming from outdated technology and poor coordination between agencies. These shortcomings led to delayed and inconsistent warnings, especially regarding the severity of the flooding, contributing to a tragic loss of life and widespread property damage. This month, our panel of experts will discuss their experiences with agency coordination, communicating with the public, and leveraging media and technology to enhance incident communication strategies.
